The Sendai Tanabata Festival is a traditional event that has continued since 1567 ( Early Edo era )
Each year from 6th to 8th August, Sendai city in Miyagi prefecture has been decorated by local residents with Tanabata ( colored paper streamers ) .
This festival held to celebrate the meeting of Orihime and Hikoboshi.
Orihime and Hikobori are lovers, but they have been separated from each other.
Tanabata on July 7th is the only day in the year when they can meet across the Milky Way.

The festival is characterized by the elegance of the Star Festival and the gorgeous glitter of the decoration.

The start is “Sendai station”. Leave the station and pass through the arcade street and head to Gotokudai Park while watching Tanabata ornaments.
There is the event at this park.

The Sendai Tanabata festival is the most famous in Japan. Tanabata has been celebrated in the region since the time of Date Masamune (1567-1636) who was the first warlord of the Sendai area. The festival began shortly after the city was founded in the early Edo Period. The Tanabata festival gradually developed and became larger over the years. Although the festival’s popularity started to dwindle after the Meiji Era, and almost disappeared during the economic depression that occurred after World War 2, volunteers in Sendai revived the festival in 1928 and established the tradition of holding the festival from 6 to 8 August.
